"Canning Time" is a paper batik that measures 12 x 20 inches in the image. It is matted in blue to 20 x 28 inches. All of the women who raised me had gardens, big gardens. My mother's garden was her sanctuary; I was not allowed to enter beyond the perimeter without permission! That also meant that fruits and vegetables had to be canned or frozen in August. Early in my marriage I tried to maintain this practice. Then, I started teaching again. School starts in August and I simply couldn't stand all day at school, come home, and make canned goods all night! I still like the colors and smells though. "Iris Image" measures 11 x 15 in the image and matted in cornflower blue measures 18 x 22. It is a paper batik. The iris is special to me. It makes me think of my mother. She loved to grow irises in the front yard but by the time they got really pretty, my dog Skipper would want to take a nap in the cool bed of leaves. "Dalas Marching" is a paper batik that measures 11 x 15 in the image and is matted in orange to 18 x 22 inches. Like Btk 2 above, it uses the Swedish folk symbol of a carved Dala Horse. "Dandelions" is a playful, bright paper batik. It has strong color and scraffitto, or incised line. It measures 11 x15 in the image and is matted in a bright yellow gold mat measuring 18 x 22 inches. I like dandelions, even though some people think they are a nuisance. They are such a persistent flower, and they continue to rearrange themselves. When I was little I gathered them as gift bouquets for Clara, the neighbor lady who raised chickens and sold us eggs. I would walk down the hill to get eggs; on the way I picked Clara flowers. By the time I got to her house, they were wilted, but she acted like I had brought her long stemmed roses! Sold.

"Fritz's Thistles" honor my father. Dad hated thistles; on the farm they are a weed in the corn and bean rows. I think they are beautiful. One day I brought dried thistles home in my trunk. Dad came out of the barn and said, "Get those damn thistles off this farm." I did; I laughed. I should have know better. He worked so hard, and thistles grow so easily. "Momma Doesn't Cook Here Any More" is a paper batik which honors my mother. Mom used to say, "Go down in the basement and get Aunt Cora." It was as if she was sitting on the cellar shelf, but in reality Mom simply meant that I was to get the jar of Aunt Cora's pickles from a special recipe. In the empty jar on the shelf, the title is written. This measures 17 x 23 at the image and is matted with a rusty colored mat to 24 x 29 inches. $135 plus shipping and applicable sales tax.

"Glass Buttons" is a combination of two paper batiks which are woven together. This gives a wonderful, modeled colored surface. The surface is also highly beaded with glass beads which pick up the colors in the 12 x 19 inch image. Pieces of ribbon and antique glass buttons are attached. It is matted in a rusty orange to 18 x 25 inches. Buttons were my favorite childhood toy. Iowa Corn Fed Rooster - Btk13 - $125
"Iowa Corn Fed Rooster" is 18 x 24 inches after being matted in a white mat. The image reflects a feisty rooster in a chicken wire cage. The image was drawn directly in heavy hand-made paper with molten wax and then dyed with multiple layers of color. The final layer of wax was scraped off, the surface burnished, and then embellishments were added. In this case, there are kernels of corn sewn on like buttons on the bottom. “Art Nouveau Profile” measures 18 x 21 inches matted in a white mat. It was drawn on handmade, heavy paper with molten wax. It was dyed using resist wax and layers of color.

“Geraniums” measures 21 x 26 inches in a white mat. I like geraniums. They are frequently used in images by Grant Wood, and my mother planted them profusely on the farm in Iowa. They are one of the few flowers I plant that “grow on their own” without much fuss. “Owl” is paper batik with soft, impressionistic colors. It measures 18 x 22 inches in a white mat. The owl sits on a fence and the fence row is filled with milkweed and other Iowa plants. Japanese Winds with Maple - Btk21 - $145
“Japanese Winds with Maple” is in a burgundy mat and measures 22.5 x 27 inches. This is two paper batiks that were cut apart and reassembled on handmade paper. The paper background is mulberry paper, and I have added gold leaf to the surface. The batiks are woven by hand to reference Japanese calligraphy. I added pieces of reed to stabilize and I have included leaves from my Japanese maple tree. I represented my school district as a Honda teacher visiting Japan. “Woven Sinkers” measures 10 x 18.25 inches. It is self mounted on stretcher strips that have masonite directly under the paper. The lapped edge is painted and textured to become a continuation of the image. There are three different paper batiks used to create this. The side panels reflect the handles of scissors. The interior weaving was a blend of two batiks. I added copper fishing lures and sinkers with copper and brass findings. “Gingko Leaves” is mounted on cream-colored handmade paper and orange archival mat. The batiks are created from two green paper batiks that I cut apart and reassembled. “Green Sea Tusks” is framed in a simple mahogany frame, 1.25 inch in width. It is matted on archival yellow gold mat with a layer of handmade brown and copper striped paper under the weaving. One long weaving holds jade beads, and from the bottom a smaller weaving is suspended with green sea urchin spines. The batik weavings themselves are green, orange, gold, and yellow. “Multi Colored Beaded Batik” is a paper batik that was mounted on mulberry paper with reeds running in parallel, horizontal lines, and then was attached to metallic gold, archival mat board. It measures 12 x 22 and is mounted is a mahogany frame which is 1.25 inch in width. The total measurement is 14 x 24 inches. Each color block area has a pale turquoise glass seed bead attached to it. There is a woven brass wire ribbon woven through as part of the surface, and brass wire springs tie the batik in place. This looks lovely in a well-lit area that shows the variations of all the colors. It could compliment any interior colored space. Sold.

“Walnut Stains” was a playful experiment with dripping wax. It measures 25 x 30 inches. I used autumn colors in a water-like application. “Tracing” is constructed from two separate paper batiks. I was working in my studio and saw the cover of a tablet. I tore the cover off and started drawing on it freely with wax. Then I used layers of dye and wax. You can see the word “tracing” in purple near the bottom. I also wove in pieces of dyed reed. The finished paper is mounted on dark green patterned rice paper and green mat board. 12.5 x 13.5 inches is the measurement. $140 plus shipping and applicable sales tax.

“Corn Sprouts” is a small batik with character. It measures 10 x 11 inches. It was drawn freely with molten wax. There is a row of corn kernels drilled and sewn on like buttons. “Birch Tree Poem” measures 16 x 22 inches. I drew directly and playfully with molten wax. After layers of color and texture, I scraped and polished the surface. Copper Grid - Btk66 - $175
Three batiks were cut and re-woven into one. Then, embellishments were added. In the orange striped areas are rust colored rings; wooden beads, and blue glass beads were also added. On top of handmade papers, a woven copper grid was added. It is 11.5 x 14 inches. The grid in this batik isolates various of my hand drawn suns and moons. The piece took a tremendous amount of time. The border suggests space and shooting stars. There are embellishments of beads and metal forms. The piece is mounted on handmade Japanese paper, which is very translucent. It measures 20 x 28 inches. $300 plus shipping and applicable sales tax.

Three Faces in Bamboo - Btk68 - $175
The piece is 10 x 20 inches. It is mounted on handmade paper, which becomes part of the composition with the addition of bamboo. I created the image from two different batik pieces. It is playful and humorous. The mat is brown. $175 plus shipping and applicable sales tax.

Eight Spools - Btk69 - $115
This batik is suggestive of all the drawers of colored thread spools my grandmother, mother, and I collected. Sewing drawers were always full. Grandma said, “Sewing supplies don’t go to waste, and ‘they don’t eat!’” I wove two batiks together to create this; then I sewed on my sewing machine. It is mounted on black netting and maroon mat board, by using straight pins. It measures 7 x 17 inches. $115 plus shipping and applicable sales tax.

Flowing Hair - Btk70 - $125
The hair in this playful image was created with an Italian marbling technique. There are two pieces of marbled paper used for the background and the hair. I added it to the batik and wove the bangs from a second batik. Then I added free form stitching with my sewing machine. $125 plus shipping and applicable sales tax.

Five Bars - Btk71 - $50
This little weaving was made from two separate paper batiks. After I wove it, I added glass rod beads and gold round beads. I stitched it to a piece of Japanese translucent paper with cords embedded. It is 4 x 6 inches on a green mounting. $50 plus shipping and applicable sales tax.

Red Eyelet Weaving - Btk72 - $175
This 16 x 16 inch weaving has some three dimensional quality. It has four woven sections forming the base. The top has a thin layer of a web-like, fibrous paper added. Then three pearl octagons and beads were added. I mounted it onto red flocked eyelet paper, which is handmade. $175 plus shipping and applicable sales tax.

This paper batik is 14 x 27 inches. It is rich with textures and layers of colors. I stitched small red wooden beads at the edge of the ovals. On the gold mat, I added a webbed material to the surface. The sun is on very heavy handmade paper and the free form edges show on two ends. $250 plus shipping and applicabale sales tax.

The color in this batik is rich with purples and warm tones. It has a real sense of depth. The border defines the spaces and the universe. The sun itself is divided with positive and negative colors. Stuck Up Sun - Btk77 - $225
The batik, including the green mounting measures 14 x 27 inches. After I created the batik I attached it to the green mat by sewing through both directly using the sewing machine. The stitched line becomes free form drawing. I like this sun because it looks so “snobbish.” I also like the deckled edges of the hand made paper.
